Hello!!
I am sure that everyone has seen about a million of these Netflix recommendation posts, but I honestly feel like each post provides new options every time I see one. I thought I’d add my shows to the mix, and I even wanted to sneak some Amazon Prime recs for those who prefer another form of entertainment. I also decided to add some reviews to the lesser-known shows on my list!
// Colony //
I actually haven’t watched this show on Netflix yet, but I did watch the first season of it when it came out on television several years ago. The show has so many twists and turns and is great for sci-fi and dystopian lovers who prefer more realistic and “present” end of the world plots.
synopsis:
“In the not-too-distant future, Los Angeles has been invaded and occupied by outside forces, causing a rift between the city’s residents; some have collaborated with the occupation, while others are rebelling and suffering the consequences that come with that choice. Former FBI agent Will Bowman and his wife, Katie, must consider their familial obligations when making their decision because they were separated from their son, Bram, during the invasion. Proxy Snyder, a cunning and powerful leader within the occupational government, offers Will the opportunity to get Bram back if he works with the invading faction. Will’s decision doesn’t sit well with Katie, but the couple risk their lives — and their relationship — to protect their family”

Ok I’m sure that most girls my age know this show, but if you don’t, please watch it right now. It will satisfy all your mermaid dreams that you had as a child. Only the first season is on Netflix but you can watch the other two on Youtube for free and the spin-off series, Mako Mermaids, is also on Netflix.
synopsis:
Teenagers always feel different, but these three Australian girls really are different; they’re mermaids! Trying to keep their special powers a secret is hard for Emma, Rikki and Cleo. When they’re not in school they’re using their magical powers to save sea turtles and rescue those in need. Local bully Zane and popular snob Miriam don’t make it easy on the girls to keep their adventures hidden.

Debby Ryan is TikTok trending right now, so might as well check out some of her better work! This show is so bizarre and takes things to the extreme. It mocks a lot about the pageant world and its dark humor is evident throughout the show. I honestly really enjoyed this one and totally recommend checking it out!
synopsis:
For years Patty was overweight, which caused her to be bullied, ignored and underestimated by the people around her. But she is now thin and seeking revenge against those who ever made her feel bad about herself through fat-shaming. Enter Bob Armstrong, a disgraced attorney with a passion for coaching beauty pageant contestants. As one of the only people who sees Patty’s potential, he takes her under his wing — first as a legal client, then as a pageant contestant. Bob hopes to coach Patty to the top of the pageant game, but he and wife Coralee have no idea how deep her rage goes or how far she will go to exact revenge on the people she feels have wronged her.
// Outlander //
The show I tell people I cry every episode, this masterpiece is one of my all time favorites. It’s an emotional journey with romance, history, and time-traveling all wrapped into one. If you love Scotland and a hot Scottish guy, definitely check it out.
synopsis:
After serving as a British Army nurse in World War II, Claire Randall is enjoying a second honeymoon in Scotland with husband Frank, an MI6 officer looking forward to a new career as an Oxford historian. Suddenly, Claire is transported to 1743 and into a mysterious world where her freedom and life are threatened. To survive, she marries Jamie Fraser, a strapping Scots warrior with a complicated past and a disarming sense of humour. A passionate relationship ensues, and Claire is caught between two vastly different men in two inharmonious lives. `Outlander’ is adapted from the best-selling books by Diana Gabaldon.
// Portlandia //
Probably one of the weirdest shows on this list, if you like Saturday Night Live, you’ll want to check this one out. The two frontrunners poke fun at typical Portland characters, and it makes me crack up every time.
synopsis:
Former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Fred Armisen and rock ‘n’ roll guitarist Carrie Brownstein first cracked up audiences as the internet sketch-comedy duo ThunderAnt. That led to this absurdist series set in Portland, Ore., that gently pokes fun at the laid-back Pacific Northwest city and the many eccentric characters that call it home. Among the many recurring guest stars on the series are Ed Begley Jr., Jeff Goldblum, Natasha Lyonne, Kumail Nanjiani and Kyle MacLachlan, who plays Portlandia’s mayor.
// Santa Clarita Diet //
Drew Barrymore dazzles in this blend of dark humor and drama. This show is so weird that you just can’t stop watching. I love all the actors in it too. Bonus- I’ve rewatched this one about 5 times!
synopsis:
Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant star in this Netflix-original series as married realtors, Sheila and Joel, who are living a quiet life, raising their teenage daughter in Santa Clarita, Calif. Their world unexpectedly changes when Sheila goes through a dramatic transformation that sends her down a road of death and destruction — but leaves her looking and feeling better than ever.
// Schitt’s Creek //
One of the funniest shows I’ve seen since The Office, this comedy is truly incredible. It is so relatable and will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy. I also talked like icon Moira Rose for at least two weeks after finishing the show. This show got me through quarantine for the first couple of weeks (before I realized quarantine was gonna last much much longer!)
synopsis:
In the sitcom “Schitt’s Creek,” a wealthy couple — video store magnate Johnny and his soap opera star wife Moira — suddenly find themselves completely broke. With only one remaining asset, a small town called Schitt’s Creek, which the Roses bought years earlier as a joke, this once-wealthy couple must give up life as they know it. With their two spoiled children in tow and their pampered lives behind them, the Rose family is forced to face their newfound poverty head-on and come together as a family to survive.

If you love the likes The Hunger Games and Divergent , this is for you. This Brazilian sci-fi is brilliant and will keep you on the edge of your toes. I only wish I could speak Portugese so that I could fully be immersed in this series!
synopsis:
In the distant future, most of the population lives in poverty in an area known as the Inland. There is an elite group, though, that is chosen to live in a virtual paradise, the Offshore. Every year, each 20-year-old gets a chance to make it to the island paradise by taking a series of tests. Only three percent of the candidates succeed and qualify to leave the impoverished Inland area. One of the newest residents of the Offshore is Michele, a naive young woman with no family who has a strong sense of justice.
