I think all grandmillennial and classic style lovers have an obsession with all things toile. I’ve been seeing lots of toile and floral patterns being released as spring is on the horizon. Here are just a few of my favorites in the perfect grandmillennial blue and white!
And in case you’re curious- what is toile?
Meaning “linen cloth” or “canvas” in French, toile (pronounced twall) is a decorating fabric that has been popular since the mid-1700s. The term in this sense refers to the actual pattern rather than the original canvas fabric, which is usually comprised of a detailed pastoral scene reminiscent of the French countryside. Surprisingly, the fabric was actually developed in Ireland rather than France, but it quickly gained popularity across Britain and France. The actual toile pattern originated from Jouey-en-Josas, a Parisian suburb, in the late 18th century. Toile regained popularity in the 1970s after being classified as stuffy for most of the 1800s and 1900s. And of course, we have seen its ebbs and flows in the 2000s, with the fabric gaining a love affair from grand millennials in the late 2010s and today.
